Custom orthotics.
Orthotics are devices designed to correct biomechanical foot disorders. They may be simple, ready-made devices or custom-tailored specifically to meet the unique needs of an individual. We make a cast of the foot and then make a custom device that corrects any misalignment in the foot. The resulting device can reduce pain and help with all kinds of walking problems.
Just as each person’s fingerprint, personality and medical condition is unique, so is their foot structure. The foot contains 26 bones, 107 ligaments, many tendons and 19 distinct muscles originating in the leg and the foot.
How these parts work together determines the balance and alignment of the foot. This, together with your patient’s weight, the type of work they do, the length of time they are on their feet and the types of surfaces they stand on all day, not to mention the type of shoes they wear, all contribute to a delicate balance and alignment of the feet. A perfectly balanced and aligned foot is extremely rare.
There are many potentially painful and debilitating conditions that can impact the human foot:
• plantar fasciitis & heel pain • bunions & hammertoes
• patellofemoral (knee) pain • metatarsal pain • tarsal tunnel syndrome
• abnormal pronation • corns & calluses • diabetic neuropathy
Most foot problems are directly or indirectly related to misalignment.
If your patient is experiencing foot pain, has deformities such as hammertoes or bunions or suffers from fatigue or muscle cramps, they probably have an imbalance that can be helped with our video gait analysis and custom orthoses.
Orthoses act like shock absorbers. They remove pressure and stress from painful areas in the feet and ankles. They also promote proper alignment. They can restore balance, improve sports performance and reduce pain in the knee, hip and lower back, too. Research shows that back problems can often be traced to foot problems. Our orthoses are custom-designed to correct biomechanical foot disorders and misalignment, reduce pain and help people walk with greater comfort. We can also create orthoses for more stylish women’s footwear.
We go beyond traditional physical therapy by developing customized orthoses based on each person’s specific needs. Our goal is always to help people move with less pain and greater comfort.
